Installation Methods

Overhead/Aerial

What is Overhead or Aerial installation?

Overhead installation refers to the process of aerially deploying fiber optic cables on utility poles, aerial supports, and existing overhead infrastructure. Instead of burying the cables underground, they are suspended above the ground, often attached to existing utility poles or other structures.

Overhead installation involves a series of steps. First, the route for the fiber optic cables is determined, considering factors such as distance, accessibility, and clearance requirements. Then, the cables are attached to the designated supports using proper hardware and secure fastening techniques. Adequate tension is applied to the cables to ensure proper sag and prevent damage due to weather conditions or stress.

Advantages:

  • Ease of Maintenance and Repair: Overhead cables are easily accessible, making inspections, repairs, and upgrades faster and more cost-effective.
  • Ideal for Difficult Terrain: Aerial installation is a practical solution in areas where digging is not feasible, such as rocky, marshy, or densely forested regions.
  • Reliable and Secure: Overhead fiber has a strong track record for performance and durability, even in challenging weather conditions.
  • Fast Customer Installation: Service can be delivered to customers quickly, reducing lead times and improving satisfaction.
  • Utilizes Existing Infrastructure: Where utility poles are already in place, installation is faster and more economical.
  • No Specialized Connectors Required: Standard components simplify the installation process and reduce costs.
  • Straight Routes: Aerial routes often allow for more direct paths, improving efficiency in fiber deployment.

Why use Overhead installation?

Overhead installation has several advantages. It can be less expensive and faster compared to underground installation since there is no need for extensive trenching. However, it's important to consider factors like clearance requirements, potential obstructions (e.g., trees, buildings), and weather conditions (e.g., wind, ice) that may affect the stability and reliability of the overhead infrastructure.

When considering overhead installation, it is worth noting that local regulations, utility company guidelines, and specific project requirements may dictate the exact solution and procedures.

Introducing Homes Passed Plus

Deploying FTTH networks often faces delays, disruptions, and extra costs from permits, traffic closures, blocked ducts, and labor shortages. Homes Passed Plus avoids these issues by pre-installing fiber at the home boundary from day one, enabling faster, hassle-free connections.
