Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling Installation?

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is an efficient, trenchless method for installing underground HDPE ducts and Emtelle’s FibreFlow microduct bundles.

HDD installation is a trenchless technique used to place underground fiber optic cables with minimal surface disruption. It involves drilling a small horizontal borehole beneath the ground, threading the HDPE duct or Emtelle FibreFlow microduct bundles through the drilled path, and then pulling it back to its final location.

How Does HDD Fiber Optic Installation Work?

The HDD process begins with a pilot hole, where a drilling rig creates a small borehole along a predetermined underground route. The rig's advanced steering capabilities allow precise control and navigation during drilling, guided by a locator that ensures the drill head moves accurately and safely, avoiding existing utilities and obstacles.

After establishing the pilot hole, the diameter of the bore is gradually enlarged using a reaming tool. This creates a larger space to accommodate the fiber optic cable, which is then attached to a pulling head and pulled back through the reamed hole, completing the underground installation.

Advantages:

  • Minimal Surface Disruption: HDD avoids extensive trenching, reducing surface disruption and minimizing impact on roads, landscaping, and existing infrastructure. This makes it especially suitable for densely populated, urban, or environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Faster Installation: HDD saves time compared to traditional trenching methods. After drilling the pilot hole, the fiber optic cable can be installed quickly, facilitating efficient network deployment within tight schedules.
  • Versatility: HDD can manage various soil types, including rocky terrain, clay, and sandy soils. The process can navigate around obstacles such as existing utilities, water bodies, or protected environments, offering flexibility in route planning.
  • Enhanced Cable Protection: HDD underground installation provides strong protection against external elements, weather, accidental damage, and vandalism, ensuring long-term network performance and reliability.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Although HDD requires specialized equipment and expertise, it can offer savings over time through reduced restoration work, lower maintenance costs, and fewer disruptions.

Why Choose HDD Installation?

HDD fiber optic installation is a preferred method for deploying underground cables due to its minimal surface disruption, quick installation, versatility, cable protection, and cost efficiency. It supports the expansion of reliable, high-speed fiber optic networks across various industries, including telecommunications, utilities, transportation, and beyond.

HDD Ducts (Horizontal Directional Drilling)

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a highly efficient and trenchless installation method for the underground placement of HDPE ducts and FibreFlow microduct bundles. Horizontal Directional Drilling is used where open cut installations are not feasible or the option to open trench is not advisable. It has minimal impact on the surrounding area, suitable for a variety of soil conditions and in general only requires two manholes.
