Case Studies
Denmark is advancing its renewable energy landscape with the construction of one of its largest wind farms, the THOR Offshore Wind Farm. This monumental project is part of Denmark's ambitious Energy Agreement, established in 2018, which aims for the country to achieve 100% renewable energy self-sufficiency by 2030.
The THOR Offshore Wind Farm, named after the nearby town of Thorsminde, is the first of three major offshore wind projects scheduled for completion before 2030. It has a projected capacity ranging from 800MW to 1,000MW, set to supply clean energy to up to one million households by 2027. The wind farm will connect to Denmark’s existing transmission network at the Idomlund station, located west of Holstebro.
Emtelle, a global leader in passive network solutions, has played a critical role in the development of the THOR project. The project, overseen by multinational energy company RWE and executed by leading construction firm NCC Denmark, is Denmark’s largest guided under-drilling initiative.
Emtelle supplied nearly 200,000 meters of various-sized ducts essential for the wind farm’s infrastructure. These durable and reliable ducting solutions were vital for the precise under-drilling techniques managed by Danboring, which facilitated the installation of the extensive cable network.
The cable ducts provided by Emtelle are integral to the wind farm’s electrical connectivity, ensuring efficient and reliable power transmission from the turbines to the shore and into the national grid. Emtelle’s red PE non-pressure ducts, which are more environmentally friendly and partially made from recycled materials, contributed to a significant 50 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional pressure ducts.
Emtelle Scandinavia A/S in Denmark played a key role in providing locally produced infrastructure solutions, further minimising transport costs and environmental impact. This proximity ensured that the project adhered to high standards of quality and safety while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding marine and land environments.
The THOR wind farm project includes the installation of 1,000 MW of offshore wind turbines, foundations, internal cables, and a potential offshore transformer station at Tuskær. This station would collect power from the turbines and deliver it to the coast, with an option for direct land connection via cables if the transformer station is not constructed.
Emtelle’s involvement in the THOR Offshore Wind Farm underscores its capability in supporting large-scale renewable energy projects and reinforces its position as a key player in the sustainable energy sector. The company's collaboration with NCC Denmark and Danboring exemplifies its commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure.
By providing essential cable ducting solutions, Emtelle has contributed significantly to a project that will have lasting benefits for Denmark's energy landscape and its transition to a sustainable future. As Denmark continues to develop more offshore wind farms to meet its 2030 renewable energy goals, Emtelle is well-positioned to support these future projects with its advanced and high-quality network solutions.
Deploying FTTH networks often faces delays, disruptions, and extra costs from permits, traffic closures, blocked ducts, and labor shortages. Homes Passed Plus avoids these issues by pre-installing fiber at the home boundary from day one, enabling faster, hassle-free connections.
