Throgs Neck Bridge, New York City

Throgs Neck Bridge

Emtelle supply FibreFlow™ solution to Hellman Electric to upgrade Throgs Neck Bridge, New York, USA

Project Background

Throgs Neck Bridge, in New York City, carries 6 lanes of the Interstate 295 over the East River connecting the Bronx with Queens. Initially opened in January 1961, in order to ease congestion on the Bronx Whitestone Bridge, the bridge is the easternmost crossing of Long Island, and due to this and its proximity to the Cross-Bronx Expressway and the New England Thruway, it is the closest route from Long Island to New Jersey via the George Washington Bridge.

With over 50 years of operation, the bridge was understandably in need of a major overhaul due the upgrade in communications, lighting and monitoring systems.

In order to successfully upgrade the bridge to meet today’s technical advances, a solution was required that was quick and easy to install, easily upgradable in the future, and that was quickly repaired if any problems ever arose. Emtelle FibreFlow™ product was the solution.

In total 5km of Emtelle Direct Install 10/8mm microduct bundle and 48km 24 fibre unit microduct cable was installed in this upgrade.

Technical Assistance Makes Emtelle Top Choice

Along with all of the reliable and quality products Emtelle supply, as always, training and technical assistance is provided to all assisted projects. This proved to be essential in this particular project, especially installing the product direct to the extreme physical environment of the Throgs Neck Bridge itself.

The product itself was installed smoothly despite the rugged conditions that the material was exposed to on the bridge structure.  The real value of the choice of Emtelle, however, was in the technical assistance provided both onsite and by its engineers to ensure the successful completion of this project.  The continued support proved invaluable to our staff.  Hellman Electric looks forward to future projects with Emtelle as more air blown fiber systems are installed in the New York City region

Nicholas Ditrio, Project Manager, Hellman Electric

Emtelle’s product engineering and support proved superb on this project, given the extreme physical environment and prescribed product tolerances. As Emtelle’s factory representative and value added reseller, this level of factory support and responsiveness allowed us to go far above and beyond our competition in the design and implementation of this next generation optical network and was instrumental to the success of the project.

Rich Malone, President, GNI Corporation (based in Lake Grove, NY)
