Emtelle presents the practical and financial rewards of investing in fibre

Rome, June 2009, 3rd World Wire & Cable Conference
Emtelle presented the challenges and the tremendous opportunities of investing in fibre-based broadband in MDU’s. In Europe about 50% of all households live in MDU, which equals 110.000.000 households. 98% don’t have access to future proof broadband.

Fibre is future-proof – and ensures future profits
Of course, large markets aren’t necessarily profitable markets. However, providing fibre-based broadband access to MDUs has been shown to be a strong earner. With its almost unlimited bandwidth, fibre provides consistent long-term revenue generation potential. In fact, Fibre-to-the-Home (FttH) operations are already profitable. These trends are supported by research conducted by the Yankee Group:

• FttH users currently use 5-10 times more access capacity than DSL users
• Average revenues per unit are more than 30% above those of DSL
• Broadband is in itself a profitable product (the most profitable for many investors)
• Fibre can handle the demand of data-intensive – and increasingly popular – applications, such as movies-on-demand, HDTV
• Video communications, seen as a crucial service and as an enabler of wider-economy services.

“MDUs are a tremendous opportunity for the industry in its efforts to roll out future-proof broadband into buildings. However, this will require new and constantly evolving sets of capabilities.” Tibor van Melsem Kocsis, Group Marketing and Business Development Director, Emtelle.

Emtelle provides customised, value-added MDU solutions
Emtelle has connected more than 300,000 homes so far. This experience has taught us that there is not ONE solution. Right from the start of our relationship with a client, we get to know their expectations, such as; the type of building (low-rise, medium-rise, high-rise), architectural issues, aesthetic concerns, and “take up rate”. We then develop a solution that meets these needs, perform predictive cost-modeling evaluations, and consider alternative product configurations and designs.

“There are many MDU solutions based on local circumstances. We can supply them all, and have invested a lot of time and money in developing customer-centric innovations.”

All solutions tailored to the customer’s requirements are derived from a couple of simple requirements;

• Reduced Capital and Operating Expenses
• Higher flexibility and sustainability (take-up)
• Lower total-cost of ownership, with increasing market capitalisation

Our fibre-based MDU solutions meet these expectations by offering the following practical benefits:

• Reduced skill sets for technicians (lower labour costs)
• Shorter, less-intrusive installation, maintenance and upgrade times
• Reduced CO2 emissions
• Durability and reliability (even during peak usage)
• A one-stop, quick turnaround source for all products needs

“MDUs are a tremendous opportunity, but the industry must constantly re-invent itself in terms of the solutions it offers. We need to get out there, show that we’re serious, and make this thing work.”
